The Bashirah Coat

She says she can change the past. They call her naïve. The past is untouchable something that defies the rule of constant change, a voice claims. They say learn from it; it is all that is possible. So, she takes off her scarf and shows them the flowers growing under it; in colors so vivid, it blinds their eyes under the gleaming sun. I have reared them anew, she declares- the memories of the past. She has irrigated the soils of the past with the water of today and let the new image bloom from it. She was taught that her life becomes what she can imagine it to be, irrespective of material change. She was taught it is the rule of creation. So, she learns. She heals, and she creates a past that no longer holds her captive but like a child instead. I change my past so that I can change my future, she says; walking towards it with a skip in her step.
